Different Welding Techniques & Their Applications

Welding is a fabrication technique that includes joining materials by melting the parts together due to melting at high temperature. The process includes exposing the components to elevated temperatures that melt the parts and when left for cooling these parts fuse together. Welding is different from other techniques like brazing and soldering as it includes melting of the base metal as well. The process also includes a filler material that is added to the joint, which melts in addition to the base metal, as per the welding configuration. The filler material is chosen in such a manner that it is stronger than the base material.

There are different methods of welding such as, shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), also known as TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), also known as MIG (Metal Inert Gas), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), submerged arc welding (SAW), electroslag welding (ESW), etc. Some of the methods are explained below.

Types of Welding Technique

·    MIG Welding: MIG welding is a type of gas metal arc welding or GMAW process in which there is a formation of an electric arc between the consumable MIG wire electrode and the workpiece metal. MIG welding stands for Metal Inert Gas welding and it makes use of a consumable electrode that heats the workpiece causing the components to join. It is preferred for high speed operations and ensures flexibility in maintaining long arc time. A general MIG welding machine setup consists of the following components:

1.)  Constant potential power source

2.)  Wire Feeder

3.)  Pressure regulator with flow meter and gauge

4.)  Gas-cooled torch

5.)  Gas Preheater

6.)  Gas hose with connectors

7.)  Welding Cable

8.)  Control Plug

The gas used in the MIG welding process is usually Argon or Co2. These gases are selected because it avoids oxide formation during welding. The welding machine application includes its usage in small as well as large industries for fabrication work, right From General Repair Work, Grill Making to Heavy Machine Building, Body Building, Vessel Building, and Heavy Structural Work, using Copper Coated Wire.

·    TIG Welding: TIG welding, also known as ‘Gas Tungsten Arc Welding’, is a welding technique that makes use of a consumable tungsten electrode. It is mainly used for welding thin sections of stainless steel and non-ferrous metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloys. TIG welding process works through the fusion energy that is produced when the arc burns between tungsten electrodes & the workpiece.

TIG Welding Machine

This TIG welding machine produces high quality heating on the workpiece. The inert shielding gas creates a protective surrounding around the weld pool and hence after completion, welding work does not require any special treatment as there is no spattering taking place. TIG welding method has the competency to carry out the operation of welding in the most difficult of the places where conventional techniques are not possible.
